Tongariro Crossing

Is New Zealand's most beautiful day hike still beautiful if you can't see it? My left contact lens ripped on the way to the Tongariro National Park, so I didn't get the full experience. But what I saw was absolutely amazing... worth every hour of grueling uphill climbing. More than 24 hours later, I am very sore and still exhausted.

The 18.5 kilometer Tongariro Alpine crossing is considered to be NZ's best day tramp (Kiwispeak for hiking... please no tramp jokes. I've heard them all before). It is also consistently ranked as one of the top ten day tramps in the world. You climb up mountains, around an active volcano crater, turquoise lakes, steam spouting forth from the ground. In addition to the photos above, you can see some of the spectacular views at this website.
