The Oscars

Did you watch the Academy Awards on Sunday? I did not, but if I'm to believe the local media, the ceremony revolved around New Zealand. Did you also come away with that impression?

Host Hugh Jackman, star of the major motion picture Australia, joked: "Because of the recession, everything is being downsized. Next year, I'll be starring in a movie called New Zealand." I might consider that an insult, but the Kiwis embraced it. Thrilled to be included in the spotlight, they printed the joke on the front page of the newspaper. There's no such thing as bad publicity!

The front page story also pointed out that Best Actress winner Kate Winslet thanked Kiwi Peter Jackson in her acceptance speech because he directed her in her first movie.

Where would Hollywood be without New Zealand?

Haha I watched and thought of you when I heard the joke. At least the Kiwis are putting a positive spin on it.
